Science-based Policy Advice
One of PRIF's core functions is research-based policy advice. PRIF provides research data, analysis and recommendations to policy makers, diplomats, journalists and civil society. PRIF researchers are involved as experts in commissions, committees and specialised working groups from the local to the international level. Our Berlin office coordinates contacts with the Bundestag, federal ministries, the administration and political foundations at the federal level. All PRIF publications, audiovisual media and events are freely available.
Formats
Policy advice by PRIF is provided through various formats:
- Membership in advisory boards of the Federal Foreign Office,
- Preparation of expert reports,
- participation in hearings of the German Bundestag,
- lectures to senior officials, such as at the Federal Academy for Security Policy.
Policy advice also takes place within the framework of applied research projects:
- in knowledge transfer projects in the research field on radicalisation, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
- in the field of natural science peace research, such as in the research and transfer cluster Natural and Technical Sciences Arms Control Research CNTR, funded by the Federal Foreign Office (AA),
- within the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium, a network for comprehensive advice to the European External Action Service as well as to member states.
Information resources
With their orientation towards the general public and contributions to political debate and education, the institute’s PRIF Reports, PRIF Spotlights and PRIF Blog are the main channels through which PRIF provides information on policy advice.
One of the publication highlights at PRIF is the Annual Peace Report ("Friedensgutachten"), which has become a central forum for discourse on peace policies in Germany. The publication has been issued in cooperation with other peace research institutes since 1987.
